Producing one that gives customers useful information still requires expertise, evidence and editorial judgement.

Anthropic’s guidance on how Claude marks AI-generated content brings that responsibility into focus. For businesses using AI to write website content, it is a timely reminder to look closely at what they are publishing and what readers actually gain from it.

Claude uses two approaches on supported models and formats: invisible watermarks embedded in generated text, and signed Content Credentials attached to supported files. Anthropic says text watermarks travel with copied content and may survive some editing, while file credentials record information about its provenance.

These markings have limitations. A mark can indicate that Claude processed material, including through proofreading or translation, without establishing who originated its ideas. Equally, an absent mark does not prove that content was created without AI.

For website owners, this raises an important distinction: identifying AI involvement and assessing content quality are separate tasks.

Google does not automatically penalise a page because AI helped write it. Its published guidance focuses on originality, usefulness and quality, regardless of how content is produced. Neither the Claude article nor the Google guidance reviewed here establishes that a Claude watermark triggers search demotion.

However, Google explicitly targets scaled content abuse: producing many pages primarily to manipulate rankings while offering little value to readers. Its examples include generating pages with AI and combining existing material without adding anything useful. Sites that violate its spam policies can rank lower or disappear from results.

That is where “AI slop” becomes a business risk.

A page can have correct grammar, relevant keywords and professional formatting while still saying almost nothing. Familiar warning signs include repetitive advice, unsupported claims, interchangeable examples and paragraphs that could appear on any competitor’s website.

Consider a home builder publishing an article about choosing a kitchen layout.

A generic draft might recommend “maximising storage”, “considering your lifestyle” and “balancing style with functionality”. Those statements offer little help to someone deciding how their kitchen should work.

A more useful article could explain a layout decision from a completed project: where the original design caused congestion, what the builder changed, which compromise the owners accepted and how the finished space works. Annotated floorplans, original photographs and comments from the designer would give the reader evidence they can apply to their own project.

AI can help organise that material. The business supplies the experience that makes it valuable.

The same principle applies to flooring guides, travel itineraries, product comparisons and professional service pages. Start with what your team knows, has observed or can substantiate. Use AI to make that knowledge clearer and easier to navigate.

Before publishing an AI-assisted article, ask:

What does this add? Include a specific insight, original example, useful comparison or practical explanation.

What supports the claims? Verify statistics, quotations, product details and linked sources.

Who has checked it? Give someone with relevant expertise responsibility for the final version.

Can the reader act on it? Explain choices, limitations and next steps clearly.

Is its creation represented honestly? Never invent firsthand experience, testing, customers or author credentials.

Google also recommends reviewing AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publication. That review extends to titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alternative text—not just the article itself.

My recommendation is to treat Claude’s transparency measures as a prompt to strengthen editorial standards. Ask your content team to demonstrate the evidence and original contribution behind each article before approving it.

Publish when you have something useful to contribute. Let AI help express it, and make someone accountable for every claim that reaches your customers.

Publishing a polished blog post has never been easier.
